How to force someone with mental health issues into treatment?

I believe a close friend of mine may be suffering from schizophrenia. She doesn’t believe anything is wrong, but is on the verge of losing her two children permanently. She is currently involved with social services, but they are treating it as a substance abuse problem. I need to know what can be done. She is of age, and refuses treatment. She lives in the state of Ohio, Cuyahoga County. More information can be provided if needed. Please anyone with any insight, it would be of great help.

There are very rigid guidelines for forcing someone into treatment, and it doesn’t sound like your friend’s situation fits those guidelines. Current state of mental health (forced) interventions is that a person has to be a serious threat to himself or to others. If that risk is present, a mental health officer can sign a person into treatment for up to a 72 hour period (for observation), during which time the courts may be brought in to extend that period.
Many people with mental illness do in fact drink and/or use drugs in an attempt to self-medicate. The substance abuse can become the focus of attention and intervention, and that can be detrimental to having the right treatment options being identified or offered.
The only option you do have is to continue to support the thought that mental health treatment can help her to
manage herself and her children more effectively, and minimize the risk of losing her children.
