Common Health Questions

Is this a common cat health problem?

My cat likes to wheeze a lot after purring and sometimes is followed by a hacking cough.

We have taken him to the vet, done a heartworm test, three chest x-rays and tried different medications to help him stop, (And yes, I have been to different vets to get different options) and nothing has really helped. We have him on benedryl but he hates the taste.

My question is do any of y’all have this problem with your cats? He is a 15 lb Turkish van and quite active.

It’s not his litter, we have used a dust free clay, pine, newspaper, corn cob and even potting soil (which he ate instead XD) and all resulted in the same problem.

Does it sound like he has trouble getting his breath? My cat did something like that periodically for a few years. Someone told me it was a “reverse sneeze” (not sure I believe that one). Eventually he starting eating 4 times a day and losing weight. Turns out he was hyperthyroid. I never connected the “wheezing” to the thyroid problem and neither did the vet, but after treatment he never did it again. If your cat is an older cat (his teen years) you might ask your vet. Other symptoms (according to my vet) included sleeping on airconditioning vents and in showers, drinking a lot of water and urinating a lot. Mine also developed a tremor. He’s on thyroid medication now and a much happier fellow.
