Has anyone ever had to put their animal down due to age, health problems, or sickness?

I worked at a veterinarian’s office for awhile, and I think I bawled every time someone had to put their pet down.
How well does a person heal afterward. Do you recommend getting an animal soon after, or waiting?

I put my Mollie(14 1/2 years) to sleep last June. It was awful but it had to be done. She couldn’t walk anymore. It was the humane thing to do. And it is because of my love that I decided it was her time. It is a struggle (the decision to put her down) between the heart and mind. The mind knows the right thing to do but your heart is breaking in two knowing that her time on this earth is short. My peace comes from the reality of the situation, her not being able to walk anymore!

As for as healing it is individual as to who heals whatever way they want. After my very first dog died, I waited 9 months. I couldn’t bare to bring in another pup. But after I lost my Mollie, I brought in my new family member quickly. That is who I am. I know that no dog will ever replace my dog who died. But I have enough love to open up my heart for another!
