What gives the federal government the right to tax?

Does anyone know of any court cases where the United States defended their right to tax the people (preferably on health care or something of the sort)? Precedents or websites explaining a certain case would be helpful.

It sounds like one of those “the-federal-government-has-no-right to tax” nutcases may have spoken to you and spurred up some curiosity. There are a number of people who have claimed the same and many of them end up landing in prison.
