To understand thyroid cancer, it helps to know the normal structure and function of the thyroid gland. Cancer thyroid generally refers to any of the four types of malignant tumors of the thyroid: papillary, follicular, medullary and anaplastic. Most patients are 25 to 65 years old when first diagnosed, women are more affected than men. Papillary and follicular tumors are more common. They grow slowly and may involve, but are not usually fatal in patients under 45 years of age. Spinal cord tumors have a good prognosis if limited to the thyroid gland and a poorer prognosis if there is metastasis. Anaplastic tumors are fast growing and do not respond well to treatment. Jaslok Health Group in India offers the best physicians and surgeons and their patients to better care and treatment.

Modules present in the thyroid —

  • Benign nodules are not cancerous. Cells from benign nodules do not spread to other body parts. They are usually not a threat to life. Most thyroid nodules (more 90 per cent) are benign.
  • Malignant nodules are cancer. They are usually more severe and can sometimes be fatal. Cancer cells can invade and damage nearby tissues and organs. Furthermore, cancer cells can break away from a malignant nodule and enter the bloodstream or lymphatic system. This is how cancer spreads from the original cancer (primary tumor) to form new tumors in other organs. The spread of cancer is called metastasis.

Very often the first symptom of cancer of the thyroid is a thyroid nodule in the neck region. However, many young adults have thyroid nodules, but usually less than 5% of these nodules are malignant. Sometimes the first sign is a lymph node enlarged. Later, the symptoms that may occur are pain in the anterior neck and voice changes. Thyroid cancer is usually found in a patient euthyroid, but the symptoms of hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism may be associated with a tumor or large well-differentiated metastases. The nodules are of particular interest when they are under 20 years of age. The presentation of benign nodules at this age is less likely, and therefore the potential for malignancy is much higher.

The following are the main types of thyroid cancer —

  • Papillary and follicular thyroid cancer accounts for 80 to 90 percent of all thyroid cancers. Both types begin in the follicular thyroid cells. Most papillary thyroid cancers and follicular tend to grow slowly. If detected early, most can be treated successfully.
  • Medullary thyroid cancer is 5 to 10 percent cases of thyroid cancer. It originates from C cells, not follicular cells. Medullary thyroid cancer is easier to control if detected and treated before it spreads to other parts of the body.
  • Anaplastic thyroid cancer is less common type of thyroid cancer (only 1 to 2 per cent of cases). It originates in the follicle cells. Cancer cells are abnormal and very difficult to recognize. This type of cancer is very difficult control because the cancer cells tend to grow and spread rapidly.

If the nodule is benign, patients may receive thyroxine therapy to suppress thyroid-stimulating hormone and must be re-evaluated at 6 months. If the nodule is malignant or indeterminate cytologic features has may be required surgery. Joint Surgery for thyroid cancer include thyroidectomy, lobectomy, and the tracheotomy. Iodine-131 radioactive is used in patients with metastatic papillary or follicular thyroid to ablate residual thyroid tissue after surgery and to treat thyroid cancer. Patients with medullary cancer, anaplastic cells, and most of Hurtle not receiving this therapy. External irradiation can be used when the resectable cancer, when repeated after resection, or to relieve pain from bone metastases.
