Selection of the best health insurance provider depends on your age, health, medical needs, location and finances. There is no single source that can claim to be the best for everyone. However, there are several companies that stand out on the basis of the Effective Health Data and Information Set (HEDIS) used to measure the quality service. Use this information to compare available health insurers.

The National Committee for Quality Assurance evaluated and classified 600 suppliers in November 2009. Each organization received a score between 0 and 100, 100 being the highest and the ideal. (Sorry, no private insurer earned a perfect 100!) However, many do so in the 80 and 90 high. The five highest rated commercial (private) insurance schemes were:

Harvard Pilgrim with 91.2

Tufts Associated Health Maintenance Organizations with 91.2

Harvard Pilgrim Health Care of New England with 90,6

Grand Valley Health Plan with 89.1

Geisinger Health Plan with 88.2

Ten other major health insurance providers were from New England Health, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield-Connecticut, Group Health Cooperative of South Central Wisconsin, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts, and CIGNA Health Care of New Hampshire.

The above study was conducted in partnership with the U.S. News and World, and the study focused on managed care operations (MCO) only. The plans are in effect for a study of 2010 which include preferred provider organizations (PPOs). To decide which type of plan you are looking for, you will have to decide how much flexibility it needs in terms of choice of doctor, and how much they are willing to pay for the privilege.
