Recovering from illness or injury can be a stressful time for the patient and the patient's family. That stress is compounded when dealing with a chronic or disability. Research has shown that, when possible, recovering at home is the best choice for mental and physical health of the patient. Unfortunately, when the patient is elderly or too injured or ill to care for themselves, recovering at home is sometimes not an option.
To find friends or members family to help with daily tasks is not always possible. Even when family members are able to help the burden on them often puts a strain family relationships and career and personal life.
Right Home Health Care Agency
Finding the right agency can be a daunting task, but not impossible, says Tilly Gambill, Manager of Marketing and Communications of the American Association for Homecare.
"People often receive health services at home following a hospitalization or care in other care. Often the hospital discharge planner or social worker provides information on health agencies in the home, "Gambill says." Ask the hospital for a list of home health agencies in their community health. In some communities, it is possible that very few agencies available. Doctors, friends and family may recommend home health agencies, as well.

To help to select the right provider, the National Association of Home Care suggests the following questions:
Questions for home care
• What are the qualifications and experience?
• How long has the agency been in business?
• Is the rating agency and accredited by a government agency as the chief of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Care program?
• Is the agency licensed by the state?
• Can the agency provide references? Ask for a list of doctors, hospital discharge planners and former clients who have experience with the agency.
• How does the agency protect client confidentiality?
• Is the inspection agency any outside organization? Can I see the results of the last inspection?
• Does the agency perform a customer satisfaction survey? Can I see the results of the last survey?
Questions About Caregivers
• What are the credentials of the caregivers who work for the agency?
• How does the agency select and train caregivers?
• Do caregivers work directly for the agency? How are they supervised?
• Are physicians subject to criminal background checks?
• Is the doctor himself was sent to my home for each visit?
• Are nurses and therapists to assess the care of the patient's home need?
• If so, what does this mean?
• Will consult the patient's physician and family members?
• Is the patient's course of treatment documented, detailing the specific tasks to be carried performed by each physician?
• Is the opening hours of the agency at any time of day or night that my doctor says is necessary?
• Can the agency provide me with written information about rights and responsibilities of providers, patients and carers?
• Whom should I call with questions or complaints? How will the agency respond?
Questions About Services Provided
• Can the agency I provide written information about available services?
• Is there a written plan of care for every patient?
• Does the agency involved the patient and caregivers in designing this plan and educate them about the care provided?
• How does the agency respond to emergencies? How much time taken to respond to calls?
• Does the agency help me find other community services such as Meals on Wheels or homemakers services, or help find medical equipment you need?
Finance Questions
• Is the agency certified by Medicare?
• Is The agency approved or accepted by my insurance plan or supplemental insurance?
• How does the agency handle expenses and billing?
• Does the agency provide detailed explanations of all costs associated with home care?
• What resources the agency will provide to help me get financial assistance, if needed?
