The first principle to keep in mind in all of your business efforts is to GIVE more than you TAKE. If you run your business and marketing with this mindset, you will have much more success in attracting like-minded people who will contribute their talents to your organization.

The basic strategy to growing your friends list goes something like this:

First, make sure your personal profile on facebook mentions NOTHING about your business. Do NOT try to market using your profile information. Instead, make sure your bio is fascinating, interesting, and genuinely unique… arouse reaction from people by being authentic and NOT talking about your business. Mention your other interests.

Put in at least 30 minutes a day. You can first look at other people’s friends who are your friends and add them. A better place to look are in facebook GROUPS. Search for targeted groups relating to your business and go for targeted people in the industry that you find in these groups. For example, if you are selling a health product, search for groups that are very health conscious or even type in the name of your actual company.

Become a member of these groups and INTERACT (NOT SPAM) within the community. Post real posts, offer real value, get into the conversation of the group. Do this every day and you will stick out. Then you can either ADD friends by sending people a request and adding a PERSONAL MESSAGE to that request (casual – e.g “I liked your post yesterday, I really agree. I think we should be friends and share ideas!”)

The more you interact with the community, the more plastered out there you will be, and the more friend requests you’ll get as well. If you are EDUCATIONAL, INSPIRATIONAL, ENTERTAINING, and ENLIGHTENING, you will get friend requests if you are consistent with your facebook marketing. In general you might want to add 5-7 friends a day and wait for friend requests to come in.
