What is the difference between a statistic and a parameter?

Can someone give me a thorough detailed explanation on telling the difference between the two?

Here is a problem:

“A health and fitness club surveys 40 randomly selected members and found that the average weight of those questioned is 157lb.

Is this a Statistic or a Parameter?

Thanks…

A parameter descibes the characteristics of an entire population. A statistic describes the characteristics of only a sample drawn from a larger population. Since the average weight came from a sample of only 40 people, not the entire population, it is properly described as a statistic.
