Canadian Health Care and working in the States?

I have an opportunity to work in the States. I was told that if I am out of the country for more than 6 months cumulative, then I renounce my free health care, or access to it. I was told that this is why Snow Birds aren’t going down to Florida anymore for the winter? What are the provisions. I want to work in the US, but not (EVER) denounce my Canuck Citizenship.

The rules on this will depend on what province you’re from, as health care is a provincial responsibility. In the province of Alberta, where I live, you need to arrange for your own health care insurance if you’re travelling out of province for more than a month. Even there, however, there are some exceptions. Check your provincial health care plan.
