Research activity – young mothers?

Hey,

I have to completely a short research activity. I was hoping to do a research activity around young mothers and perhaps education or unemployment or affects on the family or finanical problems. Can anyone suggest any possibly research questions? For example, Does limited access to childcare services prevent young mothers to completele their education?

Our teacher used, “Does post-natal depression affect the rest of the family” as an example.

Also, what about a research question about sexual health and education at school? does this result to teenage pregnancy? or safe sex?

Any other research activities suggestions? It has to be a group in society linked with a social problem?

suggestions would be great!!! xoxox

I would start off with a questionaire that is totally anonymous. You can either go to a hospital clinic and request that the receptionist give the questionaire to young moms (give a certain age group) and explain that no one is to use their name on the form. If you have a separate school for young moms you can ask the principal if you can request volunteers to fill out the questionaire. You can also visit a planned parenthood and ask if you can leave the forms. Always arrange a date to pick up the forms from the receptionist.
Questions could include:

What options were you given when you found out you were pregnant?
Did you consider adoption?
Did you graduate after having your baby?
Is the babies daddy still helping?
Are you living with your family or on your own?
What type of job do you have?
Does having a baby keep you from going to college or getting the job you want?
Does your family help you financially?
Do you get state assistance?
What precautions are you taking so that you don’t have another child before you are ready?
If you knew then what you know now about sex and babies, what would you change?
What advice would you give to teens about sex?
What advice would you give to teens that are pregnant?
What advice would you give to young mothers?
What would advice would you give to the families of young mothers?
Do you have anything else you would like us to know about sex, std’s, babies, families, experiences, regrets, hopes, thoughts?

Leave enough room for complete answers as teen mothers have a lot to say but not very many people who want to hear it. I think this is going to be a great activity for you and your friends. I think you will learn a lot from doing it. I would also ask your teacher that if you can get a teen mom to speak to your class if that would be acceptable. If the answer is yes you can put this as a final answer on the questionaire or on a separate form so you can get contact information to arrange the “guest speaker”. You will need to explain all this to any clinic you approach. Its a school project, what school you are doing it for, the principals name and the school phone number and the teachers name and the name of the class you are doing it for. This shows that you are indeed trying to get educational information and not trying to ambush young parents.
If you visit planned parenthood they will have informational pamphlets on diseases and statistics for you to take and use in class.
